And the conversation continues! Here is the next question I want to answer: What makes Christianity different from EVERYTHING else? I will do my best to answer!
Today I will deal with one difference:
There are many different religions and philosophies that teach that humans are the ultimate expression of development and ability. The idea is that humans are “god” and are the masters of their own fate. This is an interesting thought, but falls extremely short of reality. The people that follow this line of reasoning can’t prevent their own death in the future!
What does this have to do with grace? Keep reading! You see, when someone is told that they are capable of doing whatever they want, what does that person do when they realize they are not capable? When they are not able? When their abilities fall short of their realities? This creates large amounts of confusion.
This is where grace is so amazing! Grace actually communicates to us the reality of our situation. Grace tells us that we are not capable and that we always fall short. Yet, grace continues! It then tells us that Someone is able and can do for us what we are incapable of doing for ourselves!
Grace is shown by a God who reaches out to us when we are incapable of even lifting a finger to connect with Him! This is a clear distinction between the Christian faith and others. While other religions teach that relationship with God/access to “heaven”/ultimate fulfillment are found by what you do, they create a situation where the person who believes it yet can’t fulfill it is constantly confused and frustrated.
Grace does not simply deal with the problem of our actions. It deals with the problem of our identity! While other religions focus on what we do, grace focuses on who we are. Grace communicates that once Christ saves us, we become God’s adopted children (Ephesians 1:5). Our identity is transformed!
There is so much more that can be communicated about grace. At the end of the day, God gives us what we don’t deserve, God does for us what we cannot do for ourselves, and God makes us into people we couldn’t become on our own!
There is more to come! What else is different between the Christian faith and other religions? Stay tuned to find out!
