I just started a new preaching series at CityLife, talking about the Gospel. It is a powerful topic. Many have preached about it and many have written about it.
My goal is to give a fuller view of what Jesus actually accomplished by His death on the cross. His death was not simply symbolic. It was a powerful act of God that changed the course of human history!
If you want to check out my messages, you can visit CityLife Church online and listen to them.
I was recently impressed again by Luke 4:18-19. Luke repeats some verses that Jesus quoted at the starting point of Jesus’ ministry.
Here’s the text of what Jesus says:
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.”
After Jesus declares that God’s Spirit is on Him, the first thing He mentions is the gospel (Good News). Everything else that comes after is a result of the entrance of the gospel. They are not “individual” gospels or modified versions of them. No! They are the outgrowth of the power of the gospel.
Pastor Rick Warren tweeted this about a month ago:
“Never add a hyphen to the Gospel. There’s no social-gospel or prosperity-gospel or any other-gospel. Just THE Gospel.”
I like that!
There are 4 powerful results to the Gospel above:
FREEDOM – “He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,”
HEALING – “that the blind will see,”
JUSTICE – “that the oppressed will be set free,”
RESTORATION – “and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.”
If you need any one of these in your life, it might be time to allow the full power of Christ’s Gospel to penetrate your life!
