Who Cares How Much Leadership Experience You Have?

Pegs – coloured – concepts  by Ruth LIvingstone

And I mean it!

I recently realized something really simple that I can’t believe it eluded me for so long.

While I have been leading for many years…

While I was a youth pastor with a thriving youth ministry for over a decade…

While I have plenty of skills, understanding, and knowledge about how to lead a church…

While I have read multiple books on leadership…

None of that means that those I lead are at the same leadership level as I am.

So what does this require of me?

I realized that I have constantly expected people to operate at the same level that I am at.  To do the things that I do.  To understand everything I understand.

Notice that inherent in that belief is the thought that I know better than everyone else.

But, even if I do, I cannot expect people to learn overnight what it has taken me years upon years to learn.

This would be nice in a fantasy world, but not in reality.

To see people understand what I understand and do what I can do, it takes…

And, with all of that in mind, I remember this:

We will grow together.

While those I lead are growing under my leadership, I must continue to grow too.  And, much of my growth will come from things that they teach me.

The people I lead don’t care how much leadership knowledge I have.  They care about whether I’ll walk with them in this journey of growth.

I’m ready.

Hey CityLife!

We had a great week this last week and lots is coming up with us!  So, here’s the update!

1. The Power of Offense.  This last Sunday, I talked about the power of offense.  The idea was that it is impossible for someone to offend us…we can only “take” offense.  This was an important distinction to understand so that we could walk in freedom from offense.  When I asked for hands raised to see who was dealing with offense in their lives, multitudes of hands went up.  We were able to pray for those who found themselves in those situations.  God is good!

2. Trip to Oklahoma.  We will be taking a trip to Oklahoma to help in the recovery efforts during the last week of June.  We will leave on Sunday, June 23rd, or early Monday morning, June 24th.  We will return late on Thursday, June 27th.  If you are interesting in joining us, shoot me an email at!

3. Father’s Day is Sunday.  You need to invite EVERY father (and their families) that you know.  It is going to be great.  The rundown is the following: car show, competitions (with prizes), barbecue, and more!  Join us!  Also, with this Father’s Day, I will be continuing our Entourage series and talk about forgiveness.  It’s an important topic and I believe that on this Father’s Day God will bring SALVATION and HEALING to countless people.  Let’s do it!

4. Summer is beginning!  And, there is a lot going on at CityLife.  Check out the flyer below for more information!

That’s it for today!  I’m so excited for what this summer has to bring!  It’s gonna be good!

Today is Memorial Day, and I am thankful.  Thankful for so many thousands of men and women who have given their lives to give us freedom.  I honor my dad, Jim Tolle, who was in the military, serving our country faithfully.  It’s a great day!

I’m also thankful for the incredible day we had at CityLife yesterday.  We prayed for the military, continued our Entourage series, and gave generously to help people affected by the tornado in Moore, Oklahoma.

So, here’s the update!

1. We continued our Entourage series talking about going deep in our relationships.  So many times, we allow the superficiality of other relationships to negatively impact the relationships that are most important to us.  We must choose to fight against this, so that we can love and be loved deeply by those who are closest to us.

2. We gave to help people in Oklahoma.  We don’t have the numbers yet, but what I do know is that you faithfully gave to help those who were affected by the tornado.  I am so thankful for your generosity and I know that others will be too!

3. Thanks for inviting!  Remember that “Rescued people rescue people“!  Because Jesus has rescued us, we can continue to find those who need to be rescued!  Let’s continue to invite and bring our family and friends so that they may experience the amazing love of Jesus.

4. Have you checked out our website yet?  If you haven’t, go to and check it out!  We are working on maintaining everything as up to date as possible.  If you’re interested in serving on a team, you can get connected there!  Go for it!

5. This Sunday at CityLife! We will have a great Sunday this coming up.  A lot of times we feel the pressure to include people close to us who should remain far from us.  Also, we sometimes push people far away who should be closer.  We’re going to dig into the concept of knowing who should have different types of access in our lives.  I believe a lot of pain we experience in relationships is because we make wrong decisions in this area.  Come and bring a friend…it’s gonna be good!

Let’s continue to work together so we may see the city of Los Angeles and its people transformed by the life found in Jesus.

Bless you!!!

Pastor Jeff

The CityLife Weekly

5-20-13 The CityLife Weekly

Good Monday everyone!

I had a great day at CityLife yesterday and am excited about all that is going on in the future.

Here’s the update!

1. There are new faces, then there are NEW faces.  Every week we have guests who come for the first time to CityLife.  I am honored that people would be willing to check us out!  Since we are still a smaller church, I can do a pretty good job of seeing when there are a lot of guests.  Yesterday was one of those days.  I want to tell you that I am so thankful for all of you who continue to invite people to CityLife!

2. The beginning of the Entourage series.  Yesterday, we spoke about what it truly means to “Love Yourself”.  If you missed it, you missed out!  Remember this…”Hurt people hurt people.  Healed people heal people.”  We can love those around us based off of what we have allowed God to do in us.  Let’s do it!

3. The CityLife website is live!  We’ve been working on our CityLife website to get it up-to-date.  We still have more work to do, but it is up and ready to go!  The cool part is that we have English and Spanish available on one site and easy to navigate.  Check it out at here!

4. Our new service times.  We rolled out our new service times the last two weekends…10:00am for our English service and 11:30am for our Spanish service.  The times seem to be working out great so far.  So, keep those times locked down on your calendar!

5. We continue Entourage this Sunday.  There is still so much more to talk about!  We’ll be talking about how in a world of superficial relationships, we are called to take relationships deeper than ever before.  And, remember this, “deep” is not the enemy of “wide”.  We can still maintain wide networks of relationships while intentionally going deep with a few.  Bring a friend and let’s discuss on Sunday!

6. Get ready for Summer@CityLife!  It is going to be great.  We’ve got lots of things planned and I am more excited than ever before.  Announcements will be coming soon!

May you have a great week!  Let me remind you of one of the most important verses to us as a church: John 10:10 states, “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

Jesus’ PURPOSE is to give you life that is rich and satisfying.  Let’s live ON purpose FOR that purpose today and everyday.

See you!

Wow! Wow! Wow!

This last Sunday was awesome. It was an amazing Sunday.

I am so thankful for all the moms who continually give of themselves to love others, sacrificing so much to give their kids (and others)!

So, here’s what’s up with CityLife right now!

1. Thanks to all the Mother’s Day volunteers. So many of you served for the first time this last weekend to be a blessing to all the moms. I am SO PROUD of all of you. Others of you planned things in such a way that it made Mother’s Day special. Others of you stepped into leadership roles to make stuff happen. THANK YOU!

2. How are you living a life of honor? On Sunday I spoke about the idea that honor comes first.. How have you been doing with this? Honor communicates that we value people, regardless of whether they have accomplished much or not. Honor has the ability to lift people up. Let’s continue to live lives of honoring those around us.

3. “Entourage” begins this Sunday.. In this series, we dive into relationships and everything that has to do with them. My goal is to lead us into healthy relationships with those around us. Relationships are the joy of life. If you have any questions that you want answered in this series, let me know in the comments section!

4. I’m excited! New people are coming. People are giving their lives to Jesus. There is an excitement in the air. I am proud to be the pastor of CityLife. Let’s keep on reaching our city!

Much love!

Pastor Jeff

This Weekend at CityLife

CityLife multicultural

Hey everyone!

I’m ready to have a great weekend at CityLife!  God is going to show up and people’s lives WILL be transformed by him!

Here are a few notes to remember:

1. We finish up the “American Dream” series with a talk on “Investing”.  Investing is one of the most important things we can do with our money.  Come and hear about the different places we should be making investments.  It will be good!

2. Mother’s Day volunteers needed.  We are going to have an amazing Mother’s Day service in a week.  One of the things we will do is give all of the mothers of CityLife a day off from serving at CityLife, so they can be pampered at CityLife.  We are going to treat moms well on the Sunday of Mother’s Day.  To do this, we need you to help us out with serving!  Come ready to sign up this Sunday so that we can support all of the mom’s.

3. Bring a friend!  It’s not everyday that we like to invite guests when we talk about money at church.  But, this Sunday will make it clear that how we invest our money is to serve God and serve others!  So, bring a friend this Sunday.  It will be good!

Let’s have a great weekend at CityLife!

Will You Consider Joining Us at CityLife This Weekend?

Bloody Cross 4

Hey everyone!

What an incredible week this is as we honor and celebrate all that Jesus has done for us!  This singular moment in history, this reality of the death and resurrection of Jesus, is the one event that has changed the course of the world and eternity.

I love it how Paul, a follower of Jesus states it.  In a letter to the Corinthian church (1 Corinthians 15:12-20) he states,

“12 But tell me this—since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead? 13 For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. 15 And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can’t be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. 16 And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. 18 In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost! 19 And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world. 20 But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.”

Jesus died and Jesus rose!

In this we place our hope!

So, would you consider joining CityLife this weekend?  And, if you are a part of CityLife would you consider being a part of all that we have going on as we get ready to invite our guests this weekend?  Read on and check out what’s happening at CityLife!

(A side note: ALL events are happening at East Valley High School.  5525 Vineland Ave, North Hollywood, CA 91601)

GOOD FRIDAY (tonight!!!)

We will have an intimate time in worship, communion, Bible reading and more!  Come and join us as we talk about “I Am Barabbas”.  God took the place of the worst of sinners.  What amazing love and grace!  Join us TONIGHT at 6:30pm for English and 7:45pm for Spanish.

Hello My Name is Barabbas

We have a lot going on!  Join us at these times:

10:30am and 2:00pm PRAYER.  We will have two times of prayer on Saturday as we get ready for Easter Sunday, asking God to open people’s hearts to the life that He has for them!

10-4pm RECYCLING EVENT.  Donations go to help our community outreach and to help East Valley High School.  At this event, we will be inviting our community to join us on Easter Sunday.

We all have doors in our lives.  A door is an entryway, an access point to something beyond it.  Some doors are hard to get through.  Some doors seem designed to keep us out.  Jesus is the one with the master key to open up the door of life.  If we choose to walk through it, we can experience all that he has for us!

This will be a Sunday filled with a kid’s Easter Egg Hunt (during the service), a service filled with spoken word, drama, music and more!  And above all, we will celebrate all that Jesus did for us!  Baptisms will follow!

Join us at 9am for English and 11am for Spanish.  It will be a great day!!!
