That New Car Smell

A couple of people I know recently bought new cars. I love new cars! (who doesn’t?)

As I leaned in to each of their cars to take a look, I immediately got the whiff of that new car smell. There is nothing like it! It is quite possibly one of the top 20 experiences on planet earth.

I’m not sure where it falls on the list of top 20, but it’s in there somewhere!

Either way, it reminded me of a recent experience. My car was extremely dirty and it had been ages since I had washed it. I decided to take it to one of those drive thru car washes.

They gave me three options…you know these: the normal one, the deluxe one, then the your-car-is-amazing-and-you-need-a-top-of-the-line-car-wash. Fr one time in my life, I decided on the third option.

Te cool thing was that for a couple of dollars more I got some cleaner for the inside of my car and some air freshener.

Air freshener!

The last air freshener I had in my car was one from Christmas that had lost is scent about 5 years ago.

Yes…you read that correctly. The Santa Clause air freshener was hanging on my rear view mirror for 5 years!

Back to the car wash.

They gave me a choice of six or seven different scents. Cherry. Lemon. New car.

Yes. There is a new car smell air freshener! This world is more amazing than I thought!

Either way, I chose the lemon scented air freshener. But, after taking a smell in some new cars, I know which one I’m going for next time.

Here’s what all of this reminded me of. We all make promises about that new car smell. We say, “I’m going to do everything possible to keep this smell in my car”. But, inevitably, at some point, it goes away.

And the same is true of life. The new gets old. The promises we make to keep certain things going never happen.

Promises, like:

I’ll read my Bible every day.
I’ll pray two hours a day.
I’ll give more to the church.
I’ll stop yelling as much.
I’ll hang out with my kids more.
I’ll save money.

We do well for a bit, then we fail. It goes away.

Can we get it back?

Jesus is the one who makes us new. And, unlike a regular air freshener that only masks the old car smell, Jesus makes us completely new again.

Go to Jesus today. He doesn’t disappoint!

Why I Read the Bible

5-29-13 Do Devotions Daily

After healing a lame man on the Sabbath, Jesus was being harassed by a group of Jewish leaders.  Jesus then went into a longer explanation about who he was and what he was doing on earth.

As a part of his words, Jesus says in John 5:39-40, “39 “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! 40 Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life.”

There are those who believe that we engage with Scripture in order to learn more about Scripture.  There are those who believe that we engage with Scripture in order to learn more about God.  Then, there are those who see Scripture as not only powerful, but also representative of Christ himself.

What this means is that the Bible is not our goal…Jesus is our goal.  Pursuing a passionate, loving relationship with God is what we are here for!

That’s why I love Jesus’ words so much!  He in no way disparages the Scriptures or declares them worthless.  On the contrary!  He makes it very clear that the Scriptures are necessary, not because they give eternal life, but because they point to the person who does!

Maybe your times of being in God’s word have been empty, dry, boring, or _______.

Might a make a suggestion?

Make it your goal of devotional times and Scripture study to engage more of Jesus as you engage Scripture.

Do not just simply read the Bible to learn more or to grow more…get yourself into God’s Word because it leads to the person of Jesus, who is the ultimate giver of life!

That’s why, whenever I read the Bible, I start with a simple prayer.  I ask God to speak to me, to show me things I haven’t seen before, to change me and challenge me, and to allow me to know him more!

And you know what?  He hasn’t failed me yet.

I have read through the Bible tons of times, and I’m not stopping any time soon!  The more I connect with God’s Word, the more I connect with Jesus!

What happens to you when you read the Bible?  What problems have you had with reading the Bible?

The CityLife Weekly

Wow! Wow! Wow!

This last Sunday was awesome. It was an amazing Sunday.

I am so thankful for all the moms who continually give of themselves to love others, sacrificing so much to give their kids (and others)!

So, here’s what’s up with CityLife right now!

1. Thanks to all the Mother’s Day volunteers. So many of you served for the first time this last weekend to be a blessing to all the moms. I am SO PROUD of all of you. Others of you planned things in such a way that it made Mother’s Day special. Others of you stepped into leadership roles to make stuff happen. THANK YOU!

2. How are you living a life of honor? On Sunday I spoke about the idea that honor comes first.. How have you been doing with this? Honor communicates that we value people, regardless of whether they have accomplished much or not. Honor has the ability to lift people up. Let’s continue to live lives of honoring those around us.

3. “Entourage” begins this Sunday.. In this series, we dive into relationships and everything that has to do with them. My goal is to lead us into healthy relationships with those around us. Relationships are the joy of life. If you have any questions that you want answered in this series, let me know in the comments section!

4. I’m excited! New people are coming. People are giving their lives to Jesus. There is an excitement in the air. I am proud to be the pastor of CityLife. Let’s keep on reaching our city!

Much love!

Pastor Jeff

What is Going On?

Bombings in Boston.

Explosions outside of Waco, Texas.

Ricin sent in letters to the president and others.

Does this ever end?

It reminds me of the saying: “When it rains, it pours”!

Jesus states in John 16:33, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Jesus makes three things clear.

1. There will continue to be troubles and difficulties in this world.

2. He is much bigger than all of it. So much bigger that he has overcome it. HE WON!

3. In the meantime, we find our peace in him.

Only in him.

The amazing thing about Jesus is that with him we can live in perfect peace while the storms of life are swirling around us.

Put your trust in him today! Troubles will come, but God is greater!

May his peace be yours today.

What’s Your Response?

The cross is empty!

What great news!

Our faith is not dead…we trust in someone who is alive!

Now what?

Stop waiting and start moving.

There’s a world that needs to know about the resurrection.

Jesus is sending you!

After his resurrection, Jesus had meetings with various groups of people. The most common command he gives to people after rising from the dead is to “GO”.

In Matthew 28:7 he tells them to go and tell others about the resurrection.

In Matthew 28:19 he tells them to go and make disciples.

In John 20:17 he tells Mary Magdalene to go and tell others about the resurrection.

The most basic response to the resurrection of Jesus is to go and tell others.

Who are you telling?

Will You Consider Joining Us at CityLife This Weekend?

Bloody Cross 4

Hey everyone!

What an incredible week this is as we honor and celebrate all that Jesus has done for us!  This singular moment in history, this reality of the death and resurrection of Jesus, is the one event that has changed the course of the world and eternity.

I love it how Paul, a follower of Jesus states it.  In a letter to the Corinthian church (1 Corinthians 15:12-20) he states,

“12 But tell me this—since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead? 13 For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. 15 And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can’t be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. 16 And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. 18 In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost! 19 And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world. 20 But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.”

Jesus died and Jesus rose!

In this we place our hope!

So, would you consider joining CityLife this weekend?  And, if you are a part of CityLife would you consider being a part of all that we have going on as we get ready to invite our guests this weekend?  Read on and check out what’s happening at CityLife!

(A side note: ALL events are happening at East Valley High School.  5525 Vineland Ave, North Hollywood, CA 91601)

GOOD FRIDAY (tonight!!!)

We will have an intimate time in worship, communion, Bible reading and more!  Come and join us as we talk about “I Am Barabbas”.  God took the place of the worst of sinners.  What amazing love and grace!  Join us TONIGHT at 6:30pm for English and 7:45pm for Spanish.

Hello My Name is Barabbas

We have a lot going on!  Join us at these times:

10:30am and 2:00pm PRAYER.  We will have two times of prayer on Saturday as we get ready for Easter Sunday, asking God to open people’s hearts to the life that He has for them!

10-4pm RECYCLING EVENT.  Donations go to help our community outreach and to help East Valley High School.  At this event, we will be inviting our community to join us on Easter Sunday.

We all have doors in our lives.  A door is an entryway, an access point to something beyond it.  Some doors are hard to get through.  Some doors seem designed to keep us out.  Jesus is the one with the master key to open up the door of life.  If we choose to walk through it, we can experience all that he has for us!

This will be a Sunday filled with a kid’s Easter Egg Hunt (during the service), a service filled with spoken word, drama, music and more!  And above all, we will celebrate all that Jesus did for us!  Baptisms will follow!

Join us at 9am for English and 11am for Spanish.  It will be a great day!!!
